Imphal: The Manipur government’s attempt to resume inter-state bus services on the Imphal-Churachandpur and Imphal-Senapati routes via Kangpokpi, scheduled to start on Wednesday, failed as no passengers availed of the service.
This was the second attempt of the state government to resume transport services during the 18 months long Manipur crisis.
The first attempt was made on December 21 last year.
A government order issued on Tuesday announced to resume public vehicle movement with adequate security deployment on these roads destinating through buffer zones.
The inter-district traffic, which had been disrupted by prolonged ethnic violence in the state, will be resumed from December 4,” the government order said.
“The decision was reportedly taken after reviewing the general law and order situation in the state.”
According to the order, the availability of security forces, response systems, and feasibility inputs from different agencies made the resumption possible.
However, there was no resumption of transport in the routes.
Passengers from the Naga community and a few others are traveling, but not those from the Kuki and Meitei communities, a driver said.
Two Manipur State Transport buses, with placards reading “Imphal CCPUR” and “Imphal Senapati,” were parked at the Imphal campus, but no passengers were seen boarding them.
Responding to the government’s appeal to resume vehicular movement on the Imphal-Kangpokpi-Senapati and Imphal-Bishnupur-Churachandpur roads, civil society organizations, including the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) in Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi district, imposed a 48-hour shutdown starting at midnight on December 3.
