Imphal: Kuki militants launched gresh gunattack to Meitei village in Imphal East district of Manipur on the eve of The Manipur Indigenous People’s Cultural Exchange Festival, 2024 to be opened at Chadong village, Kamjong district on Friday.

Chief minister N. Biren Singh was to open the 2-day festival.

According to police, armed miscreants from Yaingangpokpi Uyok Ching and Thamnapokpi Uyok Ching fired several rounds towards the Meitei villages of Yaingangpokpi and Sangren at around 7:30 pm. After a brief lull, gunshots resumed around 9 pm, prompting state forces deployed in the area to retaliate, leading to an exchange of fire.

The said the gunfight, supported by central forces, continued until around 10 pm. No casualties were reported among the security forces.

The gunfight took place at the location which was approximately 1.5 km south to the Imphal-Ukhrul road which takes to Kamjong district.

Amid tight security, the chief minister’s convoy travelled along the Imphal-Ukhrul road on Friday morning to attend the festival at Chadong village in Kamjong district.
