Imphal: Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and former deputy chief minister Gaikhangam on Monday said the party will do everything possible to resist any onslaught on the Constitution and Democracy.
The Congress leader made his declaration in a press statement on Monday.
Gaikhangam’s remarks came in response to Union Home minister Amit Shah’s controversial comments on Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, during a discussion on the “75 Glorious Years of the Constitution of India” in Parliament on December 17.
Gaikhangam condemned Shah’s remarks as “disparaging and disgraceful,” and accused him of undermining Ambedkar’s legacy and belittling the Constitution’s foundations.
He criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for defending Amit Shah instead of holding him accountable. He noted that INC president Mallikarjun Kharge demanded an unconditional apology from Shah and called for his immediate resignation. Instead, Modi defended the Home minister on social media, which he described as an attempt to shield Shah from consequences.
The Congress party had raised a privilege notice against Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha on December 19. This was followed by a peaceful protest by MPs from the INDIA alliance.
Gaikhangam alleged that BJP MPs, in an act of provocation, were allowed to bring rods and sticks into Parliament, violating security protocols. He claimed the resulting commotion led to injuries to Congress pesident Mallikarjun Kharge and mistreatment of several female MPs, including Priyanka Gandhi.
Gaikhangam concluded by reiterating the Congress party’s unwavering commitment to defending the Constitution and Democracy.
He called for the immediate resignation of Amit Shah and pledged that the party would continue to resist any efforts to undermine India’s democratic values.
