Imphal: Armed Kuki militants attacked farmers while harvesting in paddy field at Mayophaund Khunou Allu Loukol, Imphal East district under the jurisdiction of Yaingangpokpi police station on Friday.
The attack was conducted a day after signing of a peace agreement between Naga Peoples’ Organisation (NPO), Senapati, and the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) on Thursday.
Police said the incident occurred at around 4.40 pm as armed miscreants suspected to be Kuki militants fired some rounds towards the Naga farmers from the hilltop of Urangpat Hill which is adjacent to the paddy field.
No casualties were reported in the incident.
Naga and Kuki organizations signed a four-point Memorandum of Understanding.The MoU emphasized collaborative efforts to maintain, safeguard, and promote a harmonious atmosphere.
According to the memorandum, Naga commuters traveling through Kuki-dominated areas will not face harassment, no taxes will be imposed on Senapati Naga trucks, traders, or commercial goods, in the event of any taxation-related issues, CoTU will intervene and take full responsibility for resolving the matter, any violations of the agreement will be addressed based on the severity of the offense, ensuring accountability and adherence to the MoU.
