Imphal: Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (Cocomi) welcomes the Thadou Convention stance on its resolution to support the implementation of NRC and urged the Manipur government to strengthen the ‘War on Drugs’ campaign.

On the final day of the two-day Thadou Convention, organised by the Guwahati Organizing Committee, concluded in Guwahati on November 2, the convention resolved to support the NRC exercise if initiated by the central government in Manipur, aiming to protect Indian national interests and safeguard the rights, welfare, and interests of the citizens and indigenous communities.

The convention resolved to reinforce the Manipur government’s ‘War on Drugs’ campaign for optimal socio-economic and environmental outcomes.

In a statement signed by the chairman and secretary of TCGOC-2024, Nehkholal Haokip and Mangminial Sitlhou, respectively, the convention urged all stakeholders to collaborate and support these initiatives to ensure a brighter future for Manipur and its people.

COCOMI Coordinator Thokchom Somorendro told reporters that Manipur is home to 35 ethnic indigenous communities. However, external forces instigation led to the incidents on May 3.

He said implementation of the NRC in Manipur, with the proposed base year of 1951, would help in identifying indigenous and non-indigenous people settling in the state.

“There is concern that some groups are trying to expand the Golden Traingle to Manipur. Approximately 40 percent of the youth in the entire North Eastern have been affected, strengthening the ‘War on Drugs’ campaign is a must,” said Somorendro.

“People of Manipur would not compromise on the state’s territorial integrity.”
