Imphal: Health and Family Welfare minister Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh on Tuesday launched Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0 for Manipur at Hotel Imphal, here.

The programme was organised by National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), State Health Society, NHM Manipur and Directorate of Health Services, Manipur.

To tackle the increasing number of tobacco-users in North Eastern states, the government has taken the initiative to join the nation-wide mass campaign of the Tobacco Free Youth Campaign 2.0, the minister said.

Around 80 lakh tobacco users died every year globally. In India alone, 13.5 lakh tobacco users die every year. In order to tackle such a dangerous trend, the government has taken up such a campaign in order to bring down the mortality rate caused by tobacco, he added.

“It is hard for those addicted person to leave tobacco addiction easily. There is need of awareness from experts to help them come out of this addiction. Family members play an important role in helping them to leave this addiction,” the minister said.

He appealed the people to participate and co-operate on the two-month long campaign to help Manipur free from tobacco.

A guide book “Release of Health Workers Guide, SOPs for Tobacco Free Villages, Law enforcers Guidelines- COTPA 2023 and PECA 2019” was released. A pledge was made by the officials and attendees present in the event.

Dr. O. Sanahanbi Devi, Director, Health Services and Dr. M.Dinesh Singh, State Mission Director, NHM, Manipur were also present in the function among many others.
