Imphal: Two youths who have been held hostages by Kuki militants since September 27 have been handed over to Kangpokpi district police superintendent in presence of Assam Rifles at Gamgiphai, Kangpokpi on Thursday at around 5.15 am.

They were set release through representatives of Commitee on Tribal Unity (COTU).

The two youths have reached Imphal police station. They, before handing over to Manipur Police thanked representatives of COTU for their safe release.

Spokesperson of COTU, Kaimonlen Silthou said releasing the two Meitei youths is an example that Kuki Zo community never hurt children, old and civilian even during the war.

CM N. Biren Singh posted on his Facebook wall, “The two young men abducted in Kangpokpi on 27th September, 2024 have been safely released. I sincerely appreciate everyone from both the state and central government who worked tirelessly to ensure their safe return. Your efforts are deeply valued.”

The Kuki group demanded the government to shift Kuki inmates at Sajiwa Jai to Churachandpur Jail and to establish Police station at Kangpokpi to release the Hostage.

It was not certain whether the demands have been fulfilled.

However, 11 Kuki inmates have been shifted from Jajiwa Jail to Churachandpur Jail.
