Imphal: Chief minister N. Biren Singh has assured the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the ‘Fetal Killing in Inhumane Action of Security Forces’ that excessive force by security forces would be prevented in the future.
This was told to reporters by the JAC convenor, N. William after the JAC members met the chief minister on Sunday evening.
The mother of the baby suffered with tear gas when a gas shell fell close to her residence in Imphal West. The incident occurred during a people’s agitation demanding to transfer security power to the chief minister by handing over Unified Command authority to Manipur government. The Unified Command is in the hand of the Centre.
Given the assurances to meet the JAC’s demands the 24-hour general strike it imposed was called off.
William said the government will provide financial assistance for the treatment of Naorem Ongbi Sanjita, who is still undergoing treatment at RIMS ICU.
The chief minister assured that action will be taken against the police officials responsible for the incident. He also assured the release of protesters arrested on September 14 from the Kakwa area, after thorough discussions.
It remained a question how he will control the security forces when the Unified Command is with the Centre.
William said Biren promised to provide compensation for the stillborn child before the ritual ceremony.
The JAC called for the 24-hour general strike, effect during September 14-15, to protest the excessive use of force by security personnel.
RIMS, Imphal said the condition of Sanjita remained critical.
As of 4:30 pm, Sunday, her pulse was 124/min, BP was 108/66 mmHg, SpO2 was 95%, and her urine output ranged from 50-120 ml/hour in the last six hours. She is currently on ventilator support and ionotropes.
