Imphal: Fresh firing occurred at Mongbung Meitei village on Saturday around 11:30 am as Kuki militants launched attack from nearby hilltops and surrounding dense forests, targeting the low-lying Mongbung Meitei village in Jiribam district of Manipur.

The firing occurred amid tensions following a leaked intelligence report regarding illegal infiltration of 900 trained Kuki militants in the state planning coordinated attacks on Meitei villages on September 28.

Village volunteers in Jiribam retaliated, and the exchange of fire lasted for about an hour.

Villagers, several women, children, and elderly people were evacuated to safer locations, said a police source.

Security forces have been deployed to the area to control the situation. No casualties have been reported.

Mongbung Meitei village has witnessed multiple gun attacks since the Meitei-Kuki violence reached the district in June this year.
