Imphal: Special Investigation Team has arrested senior branch manager and three other staff of Bank of Baroda, Manipur University branch, Imphal, over the recent disappearance of gold worth around Rs 4 crore from the bank’s premises.
The senior manager was Ningombam Ganga, and the three other staff were Khaidem Jackiechan (38), Gary Moirangthem (21), and Akoijam Renash, 20.
The police took up the case following a complaint filed by Ningombam Ganga, the senior branch manager.
The complaint lodged at Singjamei Police Station, Imphal West, on the evening of September 17 mentioned that on that day, the bank’s cashier arrived at around 10 am to open the bank, as usual. The cashier discovered the lock of the bank’s strong room cash vault tampered.
The CCTV footage installed in the bank shows missing of some gold packets. It revealed that two individuals were inside the branch manager’s chamber at around 1:41 am on September 12. Shortly after, all the CCTV cameras went dark.
During the preliminary investigation, the four staff members, including Ganga, were arrested.
A case was registered at the concerned police station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The arrested individuals were produced before the duty magistrate on September 20 and were remanded to police custody for five days.
The incident took place amid escalating tensions at the Kakwa area in front of Singjamei police station, which later took lives of mother and baby at RIMS hospital, Imphal.
