Imphal: United Committee Manipur (UCM), an apex body of civil society organisations in the state lambasted Union Home minister Amit Shah’s statement of completion of 30 km Indo-Myanmar border fencing against completion of 10 km.

The civil body also sharply reacted against the statement of Amit Shah regarding the halt of fencing along the entire 1,643-kilometer Indo-Myanmar border in Kuki-dominated areas, while the cause of Manipur violence is allegedly due to Kuki infiltration from Myanmar.

An official document from the chief minister’s office directing the police chief to stay alert following an intelligence report that 900 strong armed Myanmarese terrorists have entered Manipur valley periphery to attack Meitei villages by September 28.

Amid the juncture, the Union Home minister made his remarks on the Manipur crisis, with the completion of 100 days programme of the  fresh Modi government on Tuesday.

UCM president, talking to reporters here, on Thursday said the committee has put a halt to the Indo-Myanmar border fencing construction work between border pillar numbers 79 and 81 due to border dispute. “The area between these two border pillars is still disputed and is allegedly a hotspot for infiltration.”

Dhiren criticized the decision to pause fencing in the regions considered hotspots for illegal immigration. He highlighted Shah’s recent statements, linking the unrest in Manipur to the porous border that facilitates illegal immigration and narcotics trade.

“What is the hidden agenda behind halting the border fencing in Kuki areas?”

“It is unfortunate that the central government has chosen to stop fencing in these sensitive regions. Such a move could worsen the crisis.”

“How can a solution be brought when the root cause of the chaos in Manipur is not addressed?” Dhiren questioned.

UCM welcomed the central government’s approval of Rs 31,000 crore for the construction of the 1,643-kilometer fence along the Indo-Myanmar border. He also emphasized the need to scrap the India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime to control the entry of illegal immigrants, which could lead to demographic imbalances.

CM demanded immediate acceleration of the fencing work, except in areas where border disputes exist.
