Imphal, 2 Sep 2024: Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the killing of Ngangbam Surbala in Koutruk criticised chief minister N. Biren Singh for enforcing divisive Laws in the hills and valley of Manipur.
This is an act of a coward, Ningthoujam Popilal, convenor of the JAC told reporters on Monday.
Surbala died as she was hit by a bullet on the head during Kuki attack at Koutruk in Imphal West on Sunday.
Accusing the Assam Rifles of intentionally ignoring the activities of Kuki terrorists, the JAC demanded immediate removal of all Assam Rifles from Manipur.
“Biren Singh, you are the chief minister. Your failure to enforce the law equally in both the hills and the valley is an act of a coward,” said Popilal.
A large number of state and central forces were deployed when internally displaced persons in Imphal held a rally demanding resettlement in their respective homes, and fired several rounds of tear gas shells and live bullets to disperse the agitators. However, during the recent rally organised by Kuki organizations in Kuki-inhabited areas against the chief minister security forces remained mere spectators.
Popilal urged Biren, who is also the Home minister, to take equal action in both the hills and the valley.
The JAC demanded the government to conduct immediate and serious operations against the Kuki terrorists, to arrest all involved in the Koutruk attack within 24 hours from Monday, and abrogate the existing Suspension of Operations agreement with any Kuki militant group at any cost.
The government was also urged to provide proper security (state) forces to all Meitei villages in the foothills starting from September 2. “The government must also take full responsibility for the deceased’s family.”
The JAC warned that it would intensify various forms of agitations if these demands are not fulfilled.
