Imphal : Manipur Tribal Affairs and Hills Minister, Letpao Haokip, who has been absent for three consecutive Assembly session, said he was appointed as a member of the House Committee to enquire into ‘Influx of Illegal Immigrants and Unnatural Growth of New Villages in Manipur’ without his knowledge or consent.
The House Committee was constituted on Wednesday to detect and deport illegal immigrants from Manipur.
The committee consists of 12 members, led by Manipur Water Resource Minister Awangbow Newmai as chairman.
Letpao Haokip and nine other Kuki-Zo MLAs who have been demanding a separate administration for Kuki.
Letpao Haokip in a clarification statement issued on Friday said, “Apropos to the constitution of an enquiry committee to enquire about the ‘influx of illegal immigrants and unnatural growth of new villages in Manipur’ by the Secretary of Manipur Legislative Assembly vide Bulletin Part-II, No 33 dated 7th August, 2024, mentioning my name as one of the members of the Committee, it is hereby clarified that I have neither any knowledge about my appointment nor given my consent.”
“It is also to reiterate that I, along with 9 other MLAs from the Kuki-Zo community, did not attend the ongoing Manipur Legislative Assembly session. The question of being a part of the said committee therefore does not arise.”
Letpao Haokip was appointed as head of a Manipur Cabinet sub-committee that carried out a drive to identify illegal immigrants in 2023, before the outbreak of Manipur violence.
