Imphal: Rajya Sabha MP from Manipur, titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba has demanded the Union government to declare Khwairamband Ima Keithel, the unique women market, to declare as a living cultural heritage site.
He explained the importance of the women market at the heart of Imphal city and the role of women in Manipur society.
He said the market in the only Mothers’ market run by only women, in Asia. “It is significant not only as a commercial hub, but also occupies a socio economic space in the history of Manipur.”
The two Nupi Lals (women uprising) of 1904 and 1939 against the British colonial regime was spearhead by the women of this market, he said. “This market is a symbol of women economic empowerment. It may be described as an example of Nari Sakti.”
