Imphal: Led by MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan, residents in Kshetrigao Assembly Constituency of Manipur stormed the Imphal East DC office demanding immediate distribution of National Food Security Act (NFSA) rice that had been delayed for six months.
The protestors were angry that ‘repeated appeals were made to the government to distribute the ration rice’.
The protest began at MLA Hassan’s residence, in Imphal East. They stormed at the DC office and broke through security barriers to raise their grievances and demanded immediate action to distribute rice.
Tensions escalated as protesters confronted security personnel.
Following a brief standoff, MLA Hassan and five others were granted to talk to the Imphal East DC.
The meeting, attended by the district supply officer and the superintendent of police lasted nearly two hours.
A written commitment was provided by the DSO to distribute the pending NFSA rice to eligible ration card holders by September 7.
MLA Hassan expressed frustration with the minister of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, holding him accountable for the delay.
“The minister should step down if he cannot fulfill the constitutional rights of Kshetrigao AC people,” Hassan said.
With the Assembly session starting on July 31, the MLA demanded full distribution of the pending rice within the specified timeline.
On July 23, the MLA led a similar protest to the DC office, met the additional district magistrate. He was assured of conveying the urgency to the DC for swift action.
The MLA warned to take up intense protests if the government fails to honor the written assurance.
