Imphal: Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh has communicated with Union minister of External Affairs  S. Jaishankar on arrangement for safe returning of Manipuris from turmoil ridden Bangladesh.

Violent clashes between student protesters and security forces in Bangladesh have escalated significantly, resulting in over 100 reported deaths. The unrest was erupted over controversial government job reservation policies. It prompted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration to impose a nationwide curfew and deploy military forces to restore order.

India government has been taking up measures to evaluate Indian citizens.

“I have personally communicated with Hon’ble Union Minister of External Affairs, Shri S Jaishankar ji on the developing situation in Bangladesh, and we are coordinating on arranging a safe return of Manipuris back to the country,” Biren posted on Facebook wall.

“The situation is being closely monitored by Hon’ble Union Minister, Shri S Jaishankar ji himself, and I really appreciate the steps he has taken for providing safe passage for all the Indian citizens from Bangladesh.”

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India has made an update on Saturday, on return of Indian Nationals in Bangladesh.

The High Commission of India in Dhaka and the Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet and Khulna have been assisting the return of Indian nationals home following the recent developments in Bangladesh.

In coordination with the local authorities, measures are being taken by the High Commission and the Assistant High Commissions to facilitate safe travel to the border crossing points along the India Bangladesh International Border. MEA is also coordinating with civil aviation, immigration, land ports and BSF authorities to ensure a smooth passage for our citizens.

Thus far, 778 Indian students have returned to India through various land ports. In addition, around 200 students have returned home by regular flight services through Ohaka and Chittagong airports, the ministry of External Affairs said.

The High Commission of India in Ohaka and ‘our Assistant High Commissions’ are in regular touch with more than 4000 students remaining in various universities in Bangladesh and are providing necessary assistance.

Students from Nepal and Bhutan have also been assisted with their crossing into India on request. The High Commission and Assistant High Commissions are in regular touch with Bangladesh authorities to ensure safety and security of Indian nationals and students.

Security escorts have also been arranged, where necessary, for their travel by road during repatriation through select land ports. The High Commission in Ohaka is also coordinating with civil aviation authorities of Bangladesh and commercial airlines to ensure uninterrupted flight services to India from Dhaka and Chittagong, which can be used by our nationals to return to home.
