Imphal: Twenty-four Myanmar nationals have been detected in Govajang village, Tengnoupal, Indo-Myanmar district in Manipur during biometric screening.
This was said by Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh on Thursday.
The screening will continue in India’s border town Moreh and adjoining areas, Biren said.
Manipur Police, Assam Rifles, administrative officials of Tengnoupal, and the biometric team of Tengnoupal detected the Myanmar nationals that included eight males and 16 females, during a house-to-house search operation in Govajang village on Wednesday.
Biren Singh posted the information on his Facebook wall on Wednesday.
“A combined team led by DC Tengnoupal, Md. Ejaj, SDO Moreh, E-Coy 5 AR Moreh, and OC Moreh Police Station, along with the joint biometric team of Tengnoupal, conducted a search of houses in Govajang village for the purpose of re-verification/re-identification of individuals residing in the village. During the exercise, 24 personnel (Male-8, Female-16) of Myanmar origin were identified. Further, their biometrics were captured by the team. Biometric exercises will continue in Moreh and adjoining areas. Thanks to all security personnel and other government officials.”
State government began the identification process earlier. The activity was stopped after the eruption of Meitei-Kuki conflict. The government resumed the activity in July last year.
In coordination with the central government, the state government deported 38 illegal Myanmar immigrants on June 11.
According to Manipur government, 77 illegal Myanmarese immigrants have been deported from Manipur to Myanmar on March 8 and May 2 through the border in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district.
Since March 8, until June, a total of 115 illegal Myanmarese immigrants, have been deported, said official reports.
