Imphal: Thawai Meerel (a civil body) has lambasted Manipur government for failure to counter unprecedented Kuki attacks ‘while Assam government takes up strict measures’.
Convenor of the civil body Th. Dara said Assam commandos are seen under strict vigil along the Jirighat to Silchar road to protect Meitei commuters from unprecedented attacks by Kukis while passing through various Kuki villages. “However, the security measures taken up by the Manipur government in the state are shameful.”
Dara was talking to reporters at Manipur Press Club, here on Monday narrating some ground reports during their visit to Jiribam on July 12.
A team of Thawai Mirel visited Jiribam district and met some of the displaced people at relief camps.
Over 1,000 villagers settled around Jiribam town were displaced, and over 70 houses were burnt down after violence escalated in the district on June 6.
Assam commandos are ready to take stringent action against any Kuki who tries to attack Meitei commuters along the road. The security measures taken by the Assam government are commendable, Dara said.
People of Jiribam district have been demanding an end to the ongoing violence and demanded the government to establish police outposts at Jirimukh, Leishabithol, Bhutangkhal, Boroikhal, Lamtaikhunou, and other locations.
The state government should take necessary steps to end the tension in the district so that the displaced people can return to their homes, Dara demanded.
