Imphal: Women in black attire, holding black flags in their hands, marched a rally in Imphal while Manipur government celebrates the day in Imphal on Friday.
The rally was seen marching along Singjamei road, here while the state celebrated the republic day.
Thawai Meerel and Protection and Preservation Committee, Manipur had urged people to hoist or display black flags on Republic Day to condemn the Government of India’s failure to end the present Manipur crisis.
In the more than 8-month long conflict, Kuki militants have killed many civilians and burnt hundreds of houses of the indigenous Meitei people. While the Government of India hasn’t heard the cries of the victims of the crisis, the central security forces have been allegedly seen taking the side of the Kuki militants, the committee said.
Protection and Preservation Committee, Manipur is a conglomerate of 36 organisations comprising 15 Meira Paibi bodies, 13 CSOs including AMUCO, four student bodies and four farmers’ organisations.
Thawai Meerel, a civil organisation, said the boycott is against the Government of India’s failure to resolve the present crisis and violence in Manipur that has marred Manipur since May 3 last.
Thawai Meerel convenor Thongam Dara said the thousands of central armed security forces that rushed to Manipur have failed to protect the lives of innocent people and thwart attacks launched by Kuki militants, he said.
Amid the boycott Republic Day was celebrated in the districts of the state with the main celebration held at Imphal.
Less contingents participated in the Imphal event. Only two student contingents were seen. Meitei civil women contingents which used to participate in the past did not take part in the celebration. There was no contingent representing Churachandpur.
