Assam Rifles foils betel nut smuggling in Manipur

Imphal: ​Assam Rifles foiled cross-border smuggling of 45.6 tons of areca nuts in Kamjong district on Sunday.

Acting on credible intelligence regarding the illegal transportation of Areca nuts in Kangpat Centre village, a joint search operation was launched. The column intercepted seven trucks illegally carrying Arecanuts without valid documents, meant for unlawful distribution in the black market, the Assam Rifles said.

​A total of 570 bags (approx weight 45.6 tons) of areca nuts amounting to Rs 5.472 crore was seized and subsequently handed over to Forest Beat Officer, Kamjong district, it added.
