Imphal: Eight cadres of Kangleipak Communist Party KCP (People’s War Group) (KCP-PWG) were arrested on Saturday along with arms and ammunition in connection with the kidnapping of a person for ransom.
The arrested persons have been identified as one Khwairakpam Rajen Singh, 24, son of late Kh Thoibi Singh of Churachandpur Khuga Tampak; H Sukham James Singh, 23, son of S Chaothoi Singh of Churachandpur Singhat; Moirangthem Amarjit Singh, 25, son of M Bokul Singh of Moirang Tronglaobi; Taorem Rohit Singh, 23, son of T Naocha Singh of Moirang Lamkhai; Kakyenpaibam Hemjit Singh, 21, son of late K Manglem of Ngairangbam; Sandam Romen Singh, 36, son of late S Rajen of Samurou Makha Leikai; Khagembam Dayananada Singh, 23, son of Kh Nilamani of Lilong Haoreibi Awang Leikai and Sarungbam Umananda, 34, son of S Raja of Lilong Chajing Haoreibi.
Superintendent of Police, Imphal West, Ksh. Shivakanta told reporters on Saturday that on Friday at around 1 am Imphal Police station received a complaint regarding the kidnapping of a person namely Laishram Chinglen Singh, 22, from DM College of Science New Boy’s Hostel on Friday at about 1:30 pm. In the complaint it was also mentioned that the kidnappers demanded the parents of the person a ransom of Rs 15 lakh for his safe release, threatening that failure to comply would result in their son being returned as a dead body.
The district police immediately activated and raids were conducted at different places and at around 2 am, on Saturday, a team from the Imphal West District Police carried out a raid at Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai, under the jurisdiction of Wangoi police station.
During the raid, the missing person was found and rescued from a house belonging to one Asem Chaoba, 63, along with four suspected kidnappers, with another four suspected kidnappers nearby in two vehicles. The police team swiftly apprehended suspected kidnappers during the operation.
On preliminary enquiry, it is revealed that the kidnappers belong to KCP(PWG) group and they are working under one Lamyanba Khuman of the underground outfit, police said.
One Ghatak rifle along with one magazine including 10 live rounds (7.62 mm); one AK-47 rifle with one magazine including 6 live rounds (7.62 mm) and one 0.32 pistol with one magazine including 6-live rounds were recovered from their possession, it added.
The police team also seized thirteen mobile handsets; one sword (samurai); one Honda Civic car bearing registration number MN05A 5531 in red colour and one swift car without registration number in white colour.
“They were arrested and an investigation has started,” said Shivakanta.
“Kidnapping people for extortion should be avoided. Legal action will be taken immediately and the public should reach the police if any kind of such unwanted incident occurs,” the senior officer said.
