Imphal: Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh hold a meeting with Border Road Organisation (BRO) to launch an additional 70 km of border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border on Manipur side.
“Held a meeting with the officials of BRO and deliberated the plan to begin construction of an additional 70 km of border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border. I was joined by Chief Secretary, DGP & officials from the Home Department,” Biren posted on his Facebook wall on Sunday.
“In view of the rise in illegal immigration and drugs smuggling from the neighbouring country, safeguarding our porous borders has become an urgent necessity.”
The chief minister on thursday highlighted the importance of border fencing to check influx of illegal immigrants. He said work for fencing along the international boundary by identifying some vulnerable stretches have been awarded to the BRO.
The Free Movement Regime with Myanmar which allows people on either side to travel up to 16 km inside the other country is suspended at the moment and that the Centre has been requested to permanently close the agreement in the state, he said.
