Around 20 women injured in security action in Bishnupur

Imphal: Around 20 women were injured when teams of central forces fired tear gas shells towards the agitating women at Phougakchao Ikhai Mayai Leikai on Thursday.

The women took up agitation in reaction against the announcement of the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) to bury the deceased Kuki-Zo people, died in the Manipur crisis, at the Sericulture farm, Torbung Bangla in Bishnupur district near Haolai Khopi of Churachandpur district on Thursday.

Hundreds of women rushed towards Torbung Bangla side. 

They were stopped at Phougakchao Ikhai Mayai Leikai by the security forces including Jat Regiments, Kumaon Regiment, Gurkha Regiment, CRPF and the Assam rifles. 

However, the burial was suspended for five days after ITLF communicated with union Home minister Amit Shah through Assam Rifles.

People in Imphal districts and valley outraged at the announcement of ITLF on burial of Kuki victim bodies at abandoned Meitei area.

Torbung was the village where Kukis attacked Metei and burned down their houses on May 3, victimising all the Meitei people residents there.

People gathered near JNIMS and RIMS campuses on Wednesday night to prevent anyone taking Kuki bodies from the mortuaries. The mobs at RIMS confronted till around 1 am of Thursday.

Total curfew was imposed in Imphal districts on Thursday. The curfew has been relaxed from 5 am till noon on Friday.
