Imphal: Manipur martial art Thang-Ta exponent Saikhom Nodiya Mangang passed away at his Khurai Sajor Leikai Tharoijam Leirak residence on Thursday.
The employees of Manipur State Kala Akademi led by its secretary L. Kishworjit Singh on Friday condoled the demise of eminent Manipuri Thang-Ta guru and exponent Late Saikhom Nodiya Mangang by observing a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed soul.
Born in 1932 at Nagamapal Maisnam Leikai, Kangjabi Lcirak, Imphal, Saikhom Nodiya Mangang was one of the most active and vociferous exponents of Thang-Ta.
Besides promotion of Thang-Ta in the nooks and comer of Manipur, he played a key role in promoting the art in the neighbouring state of Assam. During his lifetime he had various Thang-Ta schools in Manipur and Assam. He took personal interest in promotion of the art in Meitei concentrated areas of Assam, especially Hojai. He had served as Guru and president of ‘Kangleipak Ashida Leihouragadaba Ariba Sindamshang Asuppa’.
He is also the author of a book entitled Langjei Pukok — Thengou Puya. For his exemplary role in promotion of Thang-Ta, he was honoured with Manipur State Kala Akademi Award (2005). Besides, he was bestowed with the Royal honour `Langjei Sintak Purel’.
Manipuri Thang-Ta has lost a tireless exponent and a reverend Guru. Manipur State Kala Akademi and its entire staff extend their sincere condolence and pray that the departed soul rest in peace in heavenly abode, secretary Manipur State Kala Akademi L. Kishworjit Singh said.
Kanglei Indigenous Martial Arts and Cultural Society (KIMACS) and Apunba Huyen Lanlong have deeply condoled the demise of Thang-Ta exponent.
