Imphal: Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba on Friday said to promote and to bring the Manipuri language into classical language status collective effort and initiatives is needed from public, state government, scholars and authority concerned.
The MP was speaking to media through a video clip issued from his office located at New Delhi.
Sanajaoba on the ‘Manipuri Language day’ he extended his wishes to those who are trying to promote the Manipuri language.
The day has been observing as “Manipuri Language day” since August 20, 1992, the day Manipuri language was included in the 8th schedule along with Nepali and Konkani language.
Sanajaoba said Manipuri language was not included in the 8th schedule easily but after a long movement carried by the Manipuris.
To make Manipuri language achieve classical language status, a proposal was made at Rajya Sabha on September 22 last year after he was elected as MP Rajya Sabha from Manipur. Till date only six languages of the country has been in the classical language status. If Manipuri is included in the classical language status then Manipuri language will be the 7th Indian classical language, he added.
He said he proposed to include Manipuri language in Indian currency note during the zero hour of the parliamentary session conducted on February 12 this year. There was positive response from the central government, he added.
After he proposed the agenda to include Manipuri language in classical language status, the proposal of other languages including Marathi also came up to include in Indian classical language, he added.
He appealed the people to respect and promote Manipuri language. He said people of Manipur should speak Manipuri language as in the present scenario there is a fear that the language may get endangered.
