Imphal: Acknowledging the stunning performance of weightlifter and Padma Shri awardee Saikhom Mirabai Chanu’s recent feat at the Tokyo Olympics, a team of District Administration, Imphal East led by deputy commissioner (DC) Khumanthem Diana Devi, IAS, visited the Olympian’s residence at Nongpok Kakching of Imphal East District on Monday.
Mirabai won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 in the Women’s 49 kg category.
The visit was to honour her for her outstanding performance at the Tokyo Olympics and for setting examples for the youth of Manipur especially the girls of the state. The DC presented Mirabai with a bouquet, a momento, and gifts.
The DC was accompanied by N. Herojit Meitei, superintendent of police, additional deputy commissioner, chief executive officer, Imphal East Zilla Parishad, sub-divisional officers of Porompat/ Keirao Bitra, and district social welfare officer.
While congratulating the Olympic silver medallist, the DC said Mirabai is the real ‘Gem of India’ and is a perfect idol of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’. She has become a symbol of women empowerment and had shown the world that, it is not gender that counts but will and determination that leads to success, the DC added.
The DC also praised the parents of Mirabai for encouraging her to follow her dreams. She appealed to all the parents of the State not to clip the wings of a girl child merely because of her gender but to allow every girl child to come out of the four walls of the kitchen and household works.
Mirabai was also requested by the deputy commissioner to extend cooperation in awareness programmes taken up by the district from time to time to reach out to maximum people.
