Imphal: Youth affairs and sports minister Letpao Haokip laid the foundation stone of an Eco Tourism Destination at Lonpinu Gamvet Mol, Lonpi village of Chandel district on Sunday afternoon.
To be set up at a total cost of Rs 50 lakh, the project is jointly sponsored by Letpao, who is the local MLA of the area and the department of tourism.
The minister said the hill has a very scenic beautiful hill climb experience till its top and offers a 360 –degree aerial view of the various sides of Manipur including Churachandpur, Ukhrul, and the central plains, and also the Myanmar side. But what is more interesting is the historical significance the place has during the time of the Seven Years Devastation War.
As stated by the minister, the then Manipuri King Gambhir Singh came up to this hill during the war, and along with the village king of Lonpi, declared that the Manipuri territory will be till what the eyes could see towards Burma from this hill. As a result of this, the hill is also known as ‘Lamyeng Ching’, he added.
The new tourist destination at Lonpi, also called as Monpi, will have four lodging houses and one long dormitory to cater to the needs of the visitors and for allowing night stay facilities. For ensuring smooth and safe hill climb till the top for visitors of all ages, a staircase with one-sided railing for support will be constructed at the earliest. And regarding the management, it will be handle on Public-Private-Partnership basis, the minister, said.
