Six student organisations support shutdown

Imphal: Six Manipu student bodies declared to support the 24 hours total shut down imposed in connection with the demand for justice to the death of a medical student at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences Sanaton Athokpam of Khurai.

The total shut down was imposed by Justice For Sanaton Athokpam’ (JFSA), a people’ committee.

The shut down was announced to impose during Monday 6 pm to Tuesday 6 pm.

Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS), Manipur Students’ Federation, All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Kangleipak Students’ Association, Students’ Union of Kangleipak and Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur were the student bodies that announced to support the shutdown.

President of AIMS, Saikhom Premchand made the announcement, here on Monday.

On March 15 the medical student was allegedly found hanging inside his hostel room of RIMS. To find out the cause of the incident, a joint committee, ‘Justice For Sanaton Athokpam’ (JFSA) has been carrying out various agitations for justice.

Premchand appealed to the authority concerned to bring justice on the ‘mysterious’ death of Sanaton at the earliest

The hostel room where Sanaton was allegedly found hanging was not sealed however the room was sealed on March 26. The student body is suspicious on delaying the sealing of the said hostel roo,. AMSU vice-president Laishram Athouba said.

He said delaying on sealing the room might have some hidden agenda in order to prove that Sanaton had committed suicide.

Athouba said the six students’ body supports agitations by JFSA. One of the main reasons for imposing total shutdown by JFSA is that the government and authorities concerned are not giving priority to find out the reality behind Sanaton’ death, he added.

The shut down exempts press, ritual occasions, medical and essential services.

Athouba appealed to the people to support the total shut down.
