Imphal: Manipur paid tribute to Maharaja Narasingh on his 171st death anniversary with the main observance held at the memorial of the late Maharaja located inside Kangla in presence of chief minister N. Biren Singh on Sunday.
Biren led his Cabinet ministers, MLAs, MPs, government officials and general public in offering floral tributes at the memorial of the king, who along with Maharaja Gambhir Singh spearheaded a fierce war against Awa (Burmese) to end Seven Years of Devastation in 1826.
A contingent of Manipur Rifles offered guard of honour, gun salute and sounded last post as a mark of respect to the late Maharaja.
Biren offered Tarpan at Nungjeng Pukhri Achouba and paid obeisance to Shree Shree Govinda Jiu Jalakeli Pala.
Biren Singh talking to reporters said the observance was held to pay tributes to Maharaja Narasingh and remember his contributions in the war against Burmese to regain Manipur’s independence during the hard days of Seven Years of Devastation.
It was also organised to spread a message of sacrifice and instill the sense of patriotism into the minds of the people of the current generation, he added.
