Lady Panchayat member, son arrested for drug trade

Imphal: Police arrested a member of Kshetrigao Part-II Gram Panchayat and her son allegedly for persuading under-aged children to ferry Heroin No. 4.

The Panchayat member and her son were Buyamayum Thoibi Begum, 45, wife of late B. Abo khan, 23, of Khergao Makha Leikai yumkhaibam leirak and Buyamayum Abdul Hanal.

A house search operation was conducted by a combined team of Imphal east district police and members of Youth Athletic Development Association (YADA) of Khergao on Tuesday morning and seized banned narcotics substances—suspected to be Heroin No. 4 and WY tablets.

The seized substances were estimated to be around Rs 4,10,000 in international value.

Thoibi was elected in the year 2017.

The arrested persons along with the seized article are being handed over to Porompat Police Station for necessary legal action.

Superintendent of police, Imphal East, H. Jogeshchandra said the arrest of drug trader, who abuse under-aged children to ferry drug, by Imphal East Police is a big success. He appealed to the people to cooperate in making the state government’s War on Drugs mission successful.

He appealed the public to inform the police if nay drug peddling is found in one’s locality.

Thoibi was arrested by Porompat Police twice in narcotics related cases. It is surprising to find that an elected ward member involving in drug racket, he said.

Locals tried to interrupt when the police was taking them away.

YADA general secretary A. Aziz Khan, urging the people not to attack those who try to nab drug dealers, said they should understand that action can be taken against them as per law.
