Imphal: Manipur governor Dr Najma Heptulla and chief minister N. Biren Singh on Saturday extended greetings to the people of Manipur on Mahavir Jayanti of the Jain community that falls on Sunday.
“I extend my greetings to the people of Manipur, especially to our Jain brethren on the sacred and auspicious occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, 2021. While remembering and celebrating the birth of this apostle of peace, let us re-dedicate to follow the spiritual and ethical path propounded by Him and follow his values of living in harmony and brotherhood,” Heptulla said in her greetings.
Lord Mahavira, an apostle of peace and non-violence, showed humanity the path to salvation through love, compassion, mercy and abdication of material elements. His teachings transcend all barriers and His everlasting message of peaceful co-existence rings true even now, she said.
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, the founder of Jainism, Biren said, “Let us remember and imbibe his teachings for universal brotherhood and harmony.”
Lord Mahavir was an apostle of truth and righteousness. He propounded that ahimsa is the supreme moral virtue. He emphasised on taking five vows — Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truthfulness), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmachalya (chastity) and Aparigraha (non-attachment) — to achieve spiritual peace and enlightenment. He stressed that all living beings, irrespective of their size, shape, and form how spiritually developed or undeveloped, are equal, Biren said.
Labour minister Th. Satyabrata Singh also greets the people on the occasion stating, “Let’s pray and join hands with the people of Manipur and whole country as we celebrate Mahavir Jayanti.”
