Imphal: Manipur observes Shannaroishing-gee Numit (Players’ Day) at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, here on Thursday to commemorate the winning of “Raja Bhalendra Singh Overall Team Championship Trophy” by Manipur in the 5th National Games held at Imphal in February, 1999.
“Manipur government already has a sports policy under which national, international sportspersons and Olympians are rewarded, provide jobs and promotions. The state government will not do anything that would discourage the sports persons,” Biren said while interacting with reporters.
The state government is concentrating in sports so that today’s generation stay away from drugs and stay healthy, he added.
“Manipur is truly a Powerhouse of Games and Sports in India as it occupies a prominent place in the field by producing a number of National and International players, and also building a sense of oneness and brotherhood by developing character and discipline amongst the youths,” wrote Biren on his Facebook wall on the occasion.
The chief minister flagged off a players run to mark the occasion at the sports complex.
Biren addressed that the talent of the people here and the sacrifice of sportspersons and local clubs have made Manipur shine over the globe.
He said a pension scheme for 60 years old sportspersons has been created. Clubs that produce teams would be given Rs 2/3 lakhs, which is included in the Budget. Football teams qualified for I-League are provided Rs 50 lakh each for a year. It had been given to TRAU and NEROCA. For women, it is under process to provide the assistance to KRYPHSA Football Club.
The government is on its mission to promote indigenous martial art of the state, he added.
It is a proud privilege for Manipur, a tiny state, that it has 17 Olympians, 19 Arjun awardee, 26 Asian Games medallist, 30 Common Wealth Games medallist and the state also has winners of Dronacharya, Padamshree and Padma Bhushan awards in sports. About 43/44 from Manipur are playing in the Indian Super League (professional football league), he added.
Biren appealed not to politicalise in sports as well as in education and health.
