Imphal: Keeping up with the Assam Rifles’ initiative to curb illegal smuggling activities across the Indo-Myanmar border, Shangshak Battalion recovered Betel nuts worth Rs. 11.7 Lakhs near Namlee village on Wednesday.
Based on credible inputs from reliable sources regarding dumping of Betel Nuts in the area area along the border near Namlee village, Assam Rifles troops carried out a search operation in the area and routes leading to Myothit and Phayang from Namlee village.
At around 5:30 pm, 49 bags of Betel Nuts were discovered well camouflaged using the foliage. Approximately 4 tons of Betel Nuts were recovered the cost of which is assessed to be Rs. 11.7 Lakh.
The recovered Betel Nuts were deposited with customs department, Imphal.
In another move of the AssamRifles Chandel Battalion of 26 Sector Assam Rifles under aegis of IGAR (S) foiled timber smuggling attempt in Bongmol on Thursday.
The troops recovered a large quantity of smuggled timber and apprehended five smugglers close to Bongmol.
Acting on specific information regarding smuggling of timber across the Indo Myanmar border into Chandel, at around 04:00 A.M the troops intercepted two Shaktiman trucks and three TATA trucks. On checking, timber worth Rs 1.44 crore recovered.
The timber along with apprehended smugglers and vehicles were handed over to district forest officer, Tengnoupal for further legal action.
