Imphal: MLA Kh. Joykishan has urged the Manipur Government to allow opening of Ima Keithel (women market) following the ECI’s notification to conduct by-elections for two assembly constituencies on November 7.
Lilong and Wangjing Tentha Assembly Constituencies were listed for by-polls to fill up the vacant seats on November 7.
If conducting election is safe all the three Ima Khethel should be allowed to open, Joykishan told reporters on Thursday.
Ima Keitel has been shut down since March 25.
The ECI’s notification shows that public gathering is allowed. This can be a factor for spreading Covid-19 in the state, Joykishan said.
Joykisan said a separate standard operating procedure should be issued for conducting election campaign.
Mass gatherings for election campaign will result community transmission of the contagion, he added.
He said price of essential commodities have skyrocketed during this time Covid-19 outbreak. The consumer affairs, food and public distribution minister should take up initiatives to control price hike.
Mass testing for Covid-19 is required to the fear of the people, for which the responsibility should be given to the concerned MLAs or also to other stakeholders like civil society organisations, he said.
He urged the state government to increase the number of beds in Covid care centres.
