Imphal: National People’s Party (NPP) is prepared to contest in the upcoming by-election which is likely to be conducted soon, national president, NPP Cornad K Sangma said here on Sunday.
NPP will examine the party for potential candidates and will take necessary steps for the upcoming by-election with other parties but no decision has been made yet, the NPP chief said.
Sangma was speaking to reporters through video conferencing.
He came to Imphal for a 2-day visit with an objective to inaugurate a new state party office that was inaugurated on Saturday.
He was here to discuss the organisational matters with the state leaders.
Sangma said any person who claim to be party leader is not correct and is unconstitutional of the party. N Kayisii has already been appointed as interim state party president, he added.
He said the allegation of Thangminlen Kipgen on the appointment of Kayisii is unconstitutional and the NPP party sent show cause notice to respond the allegation within a certain deadline.
“As Kipgen failed to respond within the deadline he has been expelled from the party as per party’s constitution,” he added.
He said as seats of 13 assembly constitutions have been vacant and to contest in the upcoming by-election fair discussion will be carried among the party leaders to select potential candidate.
He personally met Khuraijam Loken of Wangoi assembly constituency on Sunday and the party recommended Loken to take part in the contest.
Sangma said he is confident that Loken would be a potential candidate, said Sangma.
The party has not yet decided how many candidates will be contesting in the by-election but the process of examination of potential candidates has started, he added.
He said for seat sharing with allied political parties it is not yet decided.
