Imphal: Troops of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) recovered 58 packets of WY (World is Yours) tablets (each packet of 10,000 tablets), 170 packets of illegal foreign cigarettes (WIN) worth approximately Rs 17.5 crores which were being smuggled from Myanmar.
The smuggled items were detected at Khemdo area.
The Assam Rifles said on receiving a specific information regarding movement of suspected vehicles carrying some illegal items in Khemdo area, an MVCP was established at Khemdo on Monday. Troops deployed at the MVCP stopped a Maruti Gypsy and a Suzuki Access (two wheeler) and carried out a detailed check of the vehicle which was coming from New Songyang. On checking, 58 packets of WY tablets and 170 packets of WIN cigarettes worth approx Rs 17.5 crore were recovered at Khemdo.
On questioning, the two aprehendees were identified as John Thangjalet Haokip, resident of Saibol Joupi , Chandel district and Vickey Haokip, resident of Khangbarol, Chandel district. They have been handed over to Chandel Police station alongwith the recovered items, the Assam Rifles said.
