Imphal: Five Congress MLAs of the Manipur Legislative Assembly have resigned as Speaker Yumnam Khemchand accepted their proposal for resignation on Tuesday.
Six Congress MLAs tendered their resignation from the membership of Manipur Legislative Assembly on Monday.
The resigned five MLAs are Okram Henry of Wangkhei AC, Oinam Lukhoi of Wangoi AC, Md Abdul Nasir of Lilong AC, Ngamthang Haokip of Saitu AC and Ginsuanhau of Singngat AC.
The speaker did not accept the plea for resignation of MLA Paonam Brojen of Wangjing Tentha AC.
The Assembly secretary on Tuesday issued a bulletin (part 2) and a notification declaring that five more Assembly seats are vacant.
Brojen is facing a disqualification case at the Speaker’s Tribunal and the final round of hearing has been fixed on August 14.
The six MLAs who tendered their resignation from the membership of Manipur Legislative Assembly submitted resignation letters to the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president on Monday.
Out of total 60 seats of Manipur Assembly the effective strength has been reduced to 48 with the resignation of the MLAs. Three BJP MLAs had already resigned earlier and four Congress MLAs were disqualified and Brojen is facing a disqualification case.
Congress MLAs Th.Shyamkumar of Andro AC, Ksh Biren of Lamlai AC, Sanasam Bira of Kumbi AC and Y Surchandraof Kakching AC were disqualified by the Speaker’s Tribunal.
This was followed by resignation for three BJP MLAs who are Samuel Jendai of Tamenglong AC, TT Haokip of Henglep AC and Soibam Subashchandra of Naoriya Pakhanglakpa AC.
