Imphal: Assam Rifles has recovered 64 cartons of imported cigarette at Heirok in Thoubal district on Thursday.
The cigarettes were recovered when in late evening when toops of Assam Rifles intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number MN 04 P 1374 Mahindra Bolero Pick Up (White colour) travelling to Heirok.
The driver was identified as Ningthoujam Amubi Singh, 50, son of Ningthoujam Ibotombi singh resident of Heirok Ward no 3, Thoubal. He was associated with a passenger identified as Ningthoujam samananda Singh, 34, son of Ningthoujam Deva singh of the same village.
The imported cigarettes were found in the vehicle. It was also revealed that some of the cartons were hidden inside the jungle which were also recovered. Sixty-four cartons of Imported cigarettes worth 1.10 crore were recovered, the Assam Rifles said.
Assam Rifles has been at the forefront of curbing smuggling of contraband items. Contraband items worth crores have been recovered in the past two days, it said.
The apprehendees and the recovered items were handed over to the Custom Office Pallel for further investigations, it added.
