Imphal: In the attempts to curb the illegal trading activities in the area, Shangshak Battalion of Ukhrul Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) seized a truck carrying illegal pine wood on Friday.
Based on credible input received from reliable source, a team of Assam Rifles from Shakpao post activated the vehicle check post at Lambui. A TATA truck carrying 420 cubic feet of pinewood planks was stopped for inspection. On checking it was found that the wood was being transported without a permit for the same. The wood was obtained from Phalang saw mill and was being illegally transported to Imphal via the Phalang-Shangshak-Lambui-Imphal route, Assam Rifles said in press release on Sunday.
Driver Arunjit Meetei, 32, son of Khomil of Khurai village and co-driver of the vehicle alongwith the illegal consignment and the apprehended vehicle with registration number MN 07 C 4145 have been handed over to Forest beat officer at Litan as a rep of DFO Ukhrul on the same day.
It is despicable that during the current pandemic situation when the entire civil administration is focussed on ensuring the safety of the people, some inimical elements like these are trying to take undue advantage of the situation and carrying out nefarious activities, the release said.
The DFO appreciated the swift action and assistance provided by Assam Rifles in preventing illegal timber smuggling in the State and added that the sincere efforts of the Assam Rifles is the sole reason for catching such a illegal consignments in a short span of time, it added.
