Imphal: Manipur social welfare department has requested the department of health and family welfare department to designate certain institutes as quarantine centres specially meant for the transgenders of Manipur.
Social welfare department has come a across some stranded trangenders who have come to the state recently from other states facing some inconvenience when they are accommodated in the Institutional Community Quarantine Centres together with either male or female inmates. It was considered prudent to open separate quarantine centre for the transgenders so as to ensure emotional security to the persons belonging to the third gender during the current pandemic, the department said in a press note on Thursday.
It requested to open a separate wing for transgenders at the current Institutional Quarantine Centre at Maria Montessori Higher Secondary School, Koirengai.
Imphal East to quarantine those coming from Red Zones, necessary logistics are to be arranged by the department of health and family welfare in this regard as per prevalent norms, the press not mentioned.
It has also been requested to open a dedicated Transgender Quarantine Centre at Government Ideal Blind School, Takyelpat.
Imphal West to quarantine stranded transgenders coming from Green Zone. The director (health and amily welfare) has issued a letter on Wednesday for the designation centres of the institutes as institutional quarantine centre and dedicated quarantine centre for transgenders.
The health department has provided masks, sanitizer, gloves, PPEs, Goggles, sodium hypochlorite solution, etc. for use in the transgender quarantine centre opened at Takyelpat.
It is expected that a total of 40 transgenders may require separate quarantine facility.
The current set up at Government Ideal Blind School can accommodate 24 persons and the remaining can be accommodated at Maria Montessori 11igher Secondary School, Koirengai. The capacity of the centre can be enhanced as per requirement, the press release said.
The stranded transgenders can also be quarantined at the community quarantine centres managed by local authorities provided separate block is allocated to ensure privacy and emotional security, it added.
Deputy director (children programme)( mobile No:7005018575), K. Saroja Devi, is the overall in-charge of the said Transgender Quarantine Centre at Government Ideal Blind School.
The social welfare department apoeals the general public to stay vigilant and observe basic precautionary measures like washing hands frequently with soap for 20 seconds; maintaining physical distance and using a face mask to fight COVID-19.
