Imphal: Manipur Police on Monday disposed betel leaves and tobacco items worth about Rs 90,30,000 at Maharabi, Sekmai.
The betel leaves were seized from a truck bearing registration number MP14-HB0655 on April 25 from Sekmai. The truck driver was identified as one Md Jaris, 45, from Uttar Pradesh. Sekmai police found 30 baskets of betel leaves dump inside the truck amid onions.
The tobacco items comprising of Sikhaar’ and ‘Saajan’ were seized by Sekmai Police from the possession of one Satminlen Lhouvum, 32 of Motbung. The tobacco items were recovered by from a Jeep bearing registration number MN01 AK 8703 driven by Satminlen from near Sekmai bazaar area on April 26.
The tobacco items were found inside two cartons. Police arrested Satminlen. The seized betel leaves and tobacco products were produced before the Judicial Magistrate first class Court-Imphal West 2 on Monday at Maharabi, Sekmai and disposed in presence of Sekmai councillor, Sekmai SDC, Sekmai Police personnel and local people.
Police said the person arrested for transporting betel leaves was produced before the Duty Magistrate, Imphal West on April 26 and later he was admitted at government quarantine center, UNACCO located at Meitram, Imphal West. As the truck also carried essential items police did not seize the truck except the betel leaves.
