Imphal, January 30, 2018: The Imphal Municipal Corporation is paralysed as its 162 employees are on cease work strike since January 11 demanding to clear their pending eight months’ salary and to implement Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.
They have started staging sit-in on the sixth day the cease work strike began, inside the municipal council office complex as the authorities remained silent to their cease work strike.
The employees had undergone similar strike for more than a month during September and November last year demanding the same. They had demanded to pay the pending salaries for five months ahead of last year’s Ningol Chakouba festival. They have missed the salary in Christmas too. The strike was withdrawn after Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development minister Th. Shyamkumar and the chief minister N. Biren Singh assured them to fulfill their demands following submission of numbers of memorandum to them.
The employees were assured to implement the sixth central pay recommendation from November with effect from April last year.
“The assurance was like a false promise and the state authorities remained silent. The commissioner and mayors remained deaf and blind”, said Laishram Ibohal, general secretary, Imphal Municipal Council Employees Union.
The municipal tasks in and around Imphal city are being conducted by hired NGOs and those who are engaged for every hundred days under MGNREGA, while the employees of the municipal council are agitating for remunerations, said Ibohal.
“This is admission season for our children in schools. We manage everyday needs with borrowed money from local money lenders and its interest has gone. We are facing pressure from various angles”, said Ibohal. “Why are the authorities treating us like animals?” Ibohal lamented.
