Imphal, December 1, 2017: Foreign gold biscuits worth Rs 7.7 crore have seized on Thursday evening form a resident of Thoubal while he was ferrying the biscuits towards Imphal at Lokchao bridge along the Indo-Myanmar road.
The gold was seized from Md. Zakariya, 26 resident of Lilong Kaleikhong. He was ferrying158 biscuits weighing 26.260 kg inside his van besring the registration number MN-05-A-9654. The van belongs to Md. Sirajur Rahaman of Lilong Haoriebi Makha Leikai, Thoubal.
Gaikhonlung Pamei, deputy commissioner customs division, Imphal, said superintendent of customs division Imphal N. Meiraba and along with a team Palel customs unit intercepted the van driven by Zakarya near the bridge around 6 pm yesterday. Being suspicious of ferrying smuggled gold he was brought to the head office, customs division Imphal. Later after ravaging and checking his vehicle the officers detected the gold biscuits of foreign origin.
Pamei said the gold biscuits were wrapped in yellow adhesive tapes. They were found concealed inside the special designed cavity at the frontal left of the van engine chassis.
The accused person is arrested and he will be produced before the court today, added Pamei.
“There has been a trend of gold smuggling in Imphal during the last six-seven months. We have made quite a number of good gold catches. Right now we have more than 170 kg of gold lying in our divisional godown. Some of the gold cases got the right for disposal and some of the cases are pending.” Said Pamei.
The recent case of gold smuggle case was the arrest of one smuggler with 12 gold bars being ferried from Myanmar by the Imphal customs division, on October 1. Another 25 gold biscuits were also seized at Khudengthabi by the Assam Rifles on August 8. The smugglers were caught along the Indo-Myanmar road in both the cases.
