IMPHAL, DECEMBER 07, 2017 (DIPR): Shri Thounaojam Shyamkumar, Minister of Forests & Environment and Horticulture & Soil Conservation today expressed satisfaction at the work of the officials and staffs of Forest Department for nurturing plant saplings in Tamei, Tamenglong district.
During his visit to Sonpram village, located 24 kms from Tamenglong District Headquarters, the Minister along with Shri Awangbow Newmai, MLA Tamei A/C, checked the 22,000 saplings/plants, planted under the State Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) in the month of July under supervision of DFO, Tamenglong Forest Division. The Minister appreciated the DFO and his team for carefully nurturing the plants.
Speaking to media persons, Th. Shyamkumar said the Tamenglong district is abundant with bamboo and his department will work for bamboo harvesting. He opined that it can help to boost the economy of the Tamenglong district thus providing sustainable livelihood to the farmers and help in bringing down the Jhoom cultivation. In the near future his department will send a project plan to the North Eastern Council (NEC) for which the Chief Minister will be consulted, he added.
He also checked the trees planted during the Vanamahotsava 2017 by the department under the Western Forest Division, Tamenglong at Palong. Expressing happiness, he informed the media that the Forest Department officials are carefully nurturing the 2,500 saplings/plants which were planted during Vanamahotsava 2017.
Minister Th. Shyamkumar said the State Government has already sent a proposal to the Wildlife Sanctuary of India to declare ‘Bunning’ as a wildlife sanctuary. Minister Th. Shyamkumar and a team of mediapersons visited Bunning (local name Piulong) which is 14 kms from Tamei Headquarters. The Minister also visited different areas under Tamei Assembly Constituency in Tamenglong district accompanied by Tamei MLA Shri Awangbow Newmai.
Minister Th. Shyamkumar described Bunning as a gift of nature and stated that he will consult with the Chief Minister, local MLA and concerned authorities so that the Forest Department can take up necessary work so that Bunning is recognised as a Wildlife Sanctuary.
Thanking Minister Th Shyamkumar for visiting the place, MLA Awangbow Newmai said survey records and locals have reported that Bunning area is abundant with variety of wildlife such as Black Monkey, Hornbill and other rare animals and birds.
Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar was given a rousing reception at the Tamei Headquarters along with MLA Awangbow Newmai. The Minister successfully concluded his two-day visit at the Tamenglong district. He inaugurated the 5-day long 14th State Level Orange Festival 2014 at the Lower Ground, Tamenglong yesterday.
