Imphal, November 27: Demanding to book the culprit who allegedly raped and attempted to murder a school girl from Senapati district in August outraged people spearheaded by women folks today blockaded national highway 2 actively at Kanglatombi bazaar area of Kangpokpi district.
The road blockade began from 6 am and lasted till 6 pm. The strike supporters burnt tyres on the road and piled up stones to block vehicles crossing the area. All forms of vehicles transport goods carrier trucks and interstate passenger bus services were blocked during the strike. Vehicles were stranded along the road.
The JAC formed against the incident and Senapati Karong Area Women Welfare Association has been pressing the government to book the culprit.
On August 4 a mass rally was held against the alleged rape of the school girl, at Senapati town. Large number of people including students took part in a rally.
A class VIII student of a government high school in Senapati district was raped and attempted to murder by unknown person at Viewland Colony, District Headquarter at around 4.30pm on August 1.
The girl was raped in an isolated place nearby a stream at Viewland Colony where she went to wash clothes and take bath with her younger sister. The incident came to light when the victim didn’t come back home after washing clothes. When her sister went back to the stream in search of the victim, she was found in an unconscious state. She was found bleeding on her head with crutches on her face and half naked.
Immediately, she was rushed to the district hospital but referred to RIMS Hospital considering her critical condition. She was and later shifted to Raj Polytechnic Hospital.
The Senapati police was informed right after the incident. Rape and attempt to murder case has been registered at women police station Senapati. Faumei Gonglin, SP.Senapati Police told the people that efforts are being made to find out the accused. He assured that the culprit will be booked and awarded befitting punishment as per the law. He also sought the people to help for establishment of clues to the identity of the rapist.
Till today the unidentified rapist remains untraceable. This has aroused the victim’s family, relatives and people.
Several organizations including Women Action development had also condemned the rape incident.
