Imphal, September 8: Manipur Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited has provided the oppportunity to the people to witness unique potteries of the state in an exhibition which was launched today.
Speaker Khemchand inaugurated a 5 days workshop-cum-exhibition of pottery crafts of Manipur at Nupilal Memorial Complex here.
Altogether 16 stalls were opened by the artisans from popular pootery crafts village from Ukhrul, Imphal East and Kakching districts. Varieties of clay and stone pottery crafts ranging from toys to traditional cookers and others ktichen utensils were exhibited.
Yiemayo Luiram, an artisan from Ukhrul told Pothashang, “This kind of exhibition is a big opportunity to sell our products. There are no specific market place for us to sell even if our items are of great demand.”
The price of the potteries she put on display ranges from Rs. 150 to Rs. 850. The lowest priced items were the cups and prices the traditional rice cookers were the highest.
The artisans from Andro, a cultural heritage village of Manipur in Imphal East and potters from Thongjao of Ukhrul displayed their unique products too.
Wangkheimayum Jadumani, inspector, Manipur handicrafts said, many of those who are supposed to participate in this exhibition failed to turn up as the panchayat election is approaching.
The workshops will begin here from tomorrow. For this the organisors have arranged experts and national award winners from the state.
The inauguration function was also attended by chairman of Manipur Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, S. Rajen, chairman; director, ministry of textiles, Sohan Kumar Jha; and K. Lamlee, director of Handlooms and Textiles Manipur.
Rajen announced that the items which could be sold during the exhibition will be bought by the MHHDC.
