Imphal, September 16: Manipur observed World Ozone Day at G.P. Women’s college, Imphal on the theme—Caring for all life under the sun, which was jointly organsied by the directorate of environment and department of forest and environment.
Minister of Forests and environment, horticulture and soil conservation, Mahud and town planning Th. Shyamkumar said, “The environment is degraded today, Loktak is now detroyed. We can protect the environment as well as the ozone layer only when we realise the world belongs to us. We all talk only theories but not implemented. We should not wait for tomorrow.”
The government is trying its best including growing of plants throughout the state. It will be visible within a year, added the minister Shyamkumar appealed the people to plant trees for which the related departments is always ready to provide saplings.
“The Imphal city is expanding with the coming up of Smart city. Making a policy is not an easy task. All need to be aware of human impact on environment and of modernisation. I as a minister need that and I am still studing on it”, said the minister.
He appealed all to take the advice of expert to make a project or programme successful.
Burning of garbages, cutting of hills, are prevalent in the state despite of knowing its impacts on environment and the ozone layer, said Shyamkumar.
Shambhu Singh, additional chief secretary, forests and environment said removing chlorofluorocarbon costs India Rs 1,500 crore and removing hydro fluoro carbon costs India Rs 3,500 crore. We need to think whether we should continue to pay the price for the comfort of somebody else and should the relatively poor countries be subsidising the richer countries for their comfort, added Shambhu.
Professor N. Rajmuhon Singh said ozone layer filters out harmful ultraviolet radiation, which is associated with an increased prevalence of skin cancer and cataracts.
The organisors introduced ENVIS centre for Manipur to the participants in the programme so that it would help them aware of the status of the environment over the globe. They asked to visit www.manenvis.nic.in for the purpose.
The website says the ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun, thus helping preserve life on the planet.
The phase out of controlled uses of ozone depleting substances and the related reductions have not only helped protect the ozone layer for this and future generations, but have also contributed significantly to global efforts to address climate change; furthermore, it has protected human health and ecosystems by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the earth
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol which aims to phase down climate-warming hydrofluorocarbons under the Kigali Amendment, adopted in 2016.
Students and experts participated the ozone day observation. Saplings will be planted along the airport road as a part of the observation.
