Governor Najma A Heptulla, former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh and minister of consumer affairs, food and public distribution and revenue minister Karam Shyam met the family members of late Rishang Keishing at the residence of the late leader at Mantripukri, Imphal West and offered condolences.
Heptullah expressing her sorrow to Khatingla Keishing, better half of Rishang said the veteran leader tirelessly dedicated his whole life for the development and welfare of the state and his passing away is an irreparable loss which will be difficult to fill up.
Okram Ibobi said the demise of the former chief minister and the first member of parliament from Manipur has created a vacuum in the politics of the state and of the nation as well, that will remain forever.
Minister Karam Shyam said, “We have lost an ideal leader and a great son of Manipur who dedicated his entire life for the welfare of the State and the people. Shri Keishing was a source of inspiration for the entire State, particularly for the youth”.
Funeral service of the leader will be performed at his home town Bungpa Khunou, Kamjong District
Rishang Keishing was a senior politician of the Indian National Congress party and a Member of the Parliament of India representing Manipur in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. Keishing served as CM of Manipur from 1980 to 1988 and from 1994 to 1997.
He first entered Manipur State’s Vidhan Sabha in 1972, winning Phungyar seat, and represented the seat for 30 years, winning the election 7 times. In 2002, he lost in the assembly polls. He then moved to Delhi, representing the state in Rajya Sabha for two terms, 2002 to 2008, and 2008 to 2014. In 2007 he became the country’s oldest parliamentarian.
He passed away yesterday at the age of 97 at RIMS Hospital, Imphal, Manipur.
