Heavy rainfall has brought fear of flood in several parts of the low lying areas and some nearby river banks in the state were flooded.
Governor Najma A. Heptulla declared half holidays for all government institutions including public sector undertakings for today on account of sudden flood.
Imphal River which passes through Imphal East and Imphal West districts has been overflowed. Several villages in Imphal East were flooded. Roads along Lamlong were submerged under water and traffic police abandoned to pass through the road.
The flood situation at different parts of Kakching and Sekmai of Imphal East has worsened the situation. Water pressure has damaged the bank of the river flowing at Wangjing area of Kakching and flooded vast residential and farm areas. Major fish crops in Wangjing were damaged.
Around 30 residential houses were damaged and blown away due to the heavy rain accompanied by storm at Nungsai village in Churchandpur Sundaymidnight. Longsai Village Authority claimed that ten houses each at Tubung in Tamenglong, Tairenpokpi in Imphal West and Chingkao in Tamenglong were shattered by the downpour and the gale. It appealed to the authority concerned to provide relief materials to the victims.
The flood control responded quickly at Khurai area on either side of the Imphal River by blocking the water flow out of the river with sand filled cement bags at high pressure locations of the river.
The water level remains standstill at present in the river. However there is fear of devastation of river banks or overflow in Imphal West areas. If rain continues there will be a worse impact, said a flood department official.
The Iril River in Imphal East is still below the danger level even if the water level is rising while the water level at Nambul River that pass through the Imphal city has come down below danger level, added the official.
In view of the present situation of incessant rainfall and likely occurrence of flood a control room has been opened in respect of Imphal East and provided three call numbers.
