Police has busted a gang associated with non signatory organisations KCP (Lalheiba) and KNF (N) who has been involved in various extortion related crimes including the recent firing at two oil tankers at Kangpokpi.
DGP L.M. Khaute briefing the reporters today said a combined team of Imphal East police and Kangpokpi police has apprehended four renegade cadres of KRA, who has disclosed that they work with KCP (Lalheiba) and KNF (N) from Kangpokpi area.
They take up pre-judicial activities including extortion with an understanding to share the extorted money, said the police chief.
The formally arrested gang members were identified as Demminthang Haokip @ Stephen, 38 (I/C Finance) s/o Ningthoujam Gobardhan Singh of Kangpokpi, Sagoulal Baite @ Lalboi, 30 (S/S Lance corporal s/o Lhunjang Baite of Lhangnom village, Hengoulen Haokip @ Haosapa, 23 (rank private) s/o Jangmang Haokip of Satang Kuki village and Thanglanmoi Chongboi @ Calvin, 30(rank private) s/o Kaikam Chongloi of Taphou Kuki village.
Five mobile handsets and nine sim cards were recovered from their possession.
Khaute said all the four were involved in six crimes—firing at two oil tankers on Wednesday at S. Golai between Kangpokpi and Changoubung in association with KNF (N) cadres; kidnapping of driver and detention of vehicles belonging to betel leaf traders for extortion and exploding IED at the house of traders in association with KCP (Lalheiba); in collection of money from vehicles at Hengbung check post; also involved in numerous extortion truck and passengers vehicles along national highway-2; firing at Satyam industry for extortion; and firing at passenger bus at Hengbung for non-compliance of their demand.
Since the day two oil tankers were fired at Kangpokpi police have been taking up operations to crack the gang. The police were able to bust the gang at around 4:00 am from Kangpokpi area.
Further investigation is being taken up with the arrest of the gang members who has been involved in troubling along the highway at Hengbung for the past about five years, said the police chief.
